Regal (Hoyts) Cinemas Mashpee Commons 6

The "Regal" Mashpee Commons 6 in Mashpee MA gets a D- and the extra bump up from a F is a result of how few theaters there are on Cap Cod.

I saw American Gangster over the Thanksgiving holiday. While the movie was quite good, the theater was terrible. The screen was tiny. The theater was arranged with an aisle down the middle so all the best seats were removed to try and cram more seats into such a tiny space. The sound was flat and weak. The curtain did not frame what was projected so I was distracted by the extra screen visible on either side of the movie.

The screen extended over the exit sign for the emergency exit so the light from the sign and the light coming through the door which may have been partially opened flooded the screen. An employee came in several times to check it and since the only aisle was down the middle of the theater, he entered my line of sight to the screen and interrupted the storytelling every time.

And finally, the employees came in to clean the theater before I had gotten up to leave, before the credits were half way done playing.

Comment from Jonesy: We don't have a "D" grade. Click the link below for more info on Cinema Grading.

Comcast IMAX 3D Theater at Jordan's Furniture in Reading

I saw 300 in a furniture store.

That's right, you heard me. I shopped for plush leather thrones and wrought iron bed posts and then sat down for stylized splatter and almost 2 hours of glorious abs of steel.

Given the bent of this site, you might wonder "What is the quality of theater one can find in a furniture store?" Those of us in the Boston Area know that the experience can be pretty darn sweet.

The theater I went to was the Jordan's Furniture IMAX in Reading. Like most any IMAX, the seats are on a steep pitch so the head in front will never be in your way. Unlike other IMAX theaters I have visited, the seats here where very comfy leather, the sound was immersive, the bass rumbled with great gumption through the seat, but the volume was not too loud. The image was crisp and in focus. Before the movie, a light show hypnotized the audience to a variety of tunes.

For a spectacle like 300, I imagined that IMAX was the way to go and I was not disappointed. I saw V for Vendetta back when it was out at the IMAX in Jordan's furniture Natick and recall it being the same superb quality.

The only thing I noticed was that given how big and crisp the image was, I actually did notice some dirt or spots on the screen at one point during the film.

Perhaps they need a curtain for protection...

The most important question, however, is "Was I moved to shop for a new coffee table?"

Watching the Spartans slay foe after foe did indeed move me to shop, but in a bizarre move on Jordan's part, the exit took me directly to the parking lot, conveniently returning me to my car. This is in stark contrast to actually getting to the theater in both locations as the path to the theater forces you to wind through several showrooms.

So a missed opportunity to sell me a $2000 desk lamp on their part but the theater itself is an excellent option for visually stunning cinema.

Kendall Square Cinema

Review by Jouissance on 02/04/07:

Last night I went to see Wresting with Angels, a documentary about playwright Tony Kushner. That I could see this film in a theatre gets that theatre and A from me.

There was no middle aisle, no coke spilled on the floor, and the seats were staggered and comfy.

Kendall Square cinema is known for great foreign, documentary, restored and independent films. It was built in 1995 so it does not have the same issues that some 'art house' theatres that attempt to adapt older venues into more modern space.

Located in Cambridge, parking is a premium but the attached garage offers parking that cost me under $3 with a validated parking ticket.

For folks who live near the T, you can reach the cinema via the red line, at the Kendall/MIT stop.

This theater has a couple of nice large screens and many small lame ones. The sound is generally too loud and the theaters are not kept clean.

I went to see Apocalypoto last week and an entire isle was flooded with some liquid or another. I went to see The Good Shepard as well and they did not have enough ticket sellers on hand. They have automatic atm style ticket purchasing machines but 2 out of three of these were out of order.

Why do I keep going there? There are not better options around that I am aware of.
