Back on thee BIG Screen in Denver

Denver's Continental Theatre has announced the next set of films in its FlashBack Features series.

These films are scheduled to play on Wednesdays at 9pm on the Giant 78-foot wide screen. Occasionally, the Flashback showing is moved to a smaller screen, so call ahead to confirm. 303 758-6732

With one exception, they aren't Flashing very far Back with this line-up. It will be interesting to see how well these titles perform.

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN Report

I saw Star Trek II at 9PM on 01/21/09 at Denver's Continental Theatre.

After the technical difficulties of last week's Raiders of the Lost Ark, I'm happy to report that tonight's presentation was excellent.

The print was beautiful. The projection was spot on. The audience (about 150) was well-behaved. The soundtrack was slightly shrill, with a bit of occasional hiss, but nothing distracting.

All in all, it was a fantastic movie-going experience.

How could it have been better?

- A 70MM print.

- No pre-show garbage (a closed curtain instead)

- More showtimes.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK Report

I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark at the Continental Theatre on 01/14/09 at 9pm.

With one notable exception, the entire experience was awesome.

After Regal's horrible pre-show commercials, general manager Mike Allen introduced the FlashBack series. He discussed the challenges of showing flashbacks in the large auditorium.

Studios sometimes balk at the idea of moving current releases from the large screen, even for one showing a week. Hopefully, Regal and the studios will continue to work together on this issue. The great movie-going experiences provided by the flashback series are good for the industry as a whole, and someday those current releases may find their own place in the flashback series. To Mike's credit, he vowed to keep the series on the giant screen whenever possible.

Mr. Allen also mentioned the growing scarcity of 35mm prints as more and more theatres move to digital, which doesn't have enough resolution to hold up on such a large screen.

After giving away a few free passes, Raiders began. The print was excellent. It wasn't perfect - there was a faint green scratch left of center from time to time, and a small bit of dirt at the reel changes. It was also a tad dark. But these quibbles are minor. The 35mm image on the Continental's 78' wide screen was transportingly beautiful.

Sound was terrific as well. Volume was perfect and the wide front soundstage created an immersive experience. Surround presence was limited, due largely to the original mix. No outside noise was heard.

The crowd of 250 was respectfully quiet.

Projection was excellent - the film was perfectly focused and framed on the giant screen... until the reel change just after the flying wing fight.

Suddenly the top quarter of the image was at the bottom of the screen. I called the box office on my cell phone and politely told them to fix it immediately. It was fixed as Indy rode his horse down the hill toward the truck. The problem occurred again at the final reel change when the credits began, and was not fixed.

I asked a (different) manager afterwards what happened. He explained that their projectionist did not splice the reels together correctly, and the print arrived too late for them to preview it for errors.

This answer really isn't satisfactory. As mentioned, these prints are very rare, and should be handled by folks who know what they are doing.

Additionally, if there isn't time for a preview screening, how hard would it be to send a projectionist into the booth every 20 minutes to monitor the reel change and make sure nothing is amiss?

If theatres want to remain in business, they must do a better job. This sort of problem does not occur when watching a movie at home.

I look forward to seeing more classics at the Continental, and trust they will strive to improve their presentation in every way possible.

I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on 12/29 at 7:40 in Auditorium 6.

The screen was large, about 50-55 feet wide, with side masking. Projection was steady and bright.

The auditorium was sloped, with good sight lines.

Sound was good, with a wide front sound stage and deep bass...

However, at least one front speaker (right?) distorted during loud, high notes.

INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM Report

It sure was nice to see a good Indiana Jones film on the Big Screen this year.

I saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at the Esquire Theatre in Denver, Colorado at midnight on 11/27/08.

The print was beautiful, the decent-sized crowd was respectful, and the presentation was acceptable.

I was struck by how "theatrical" the film was. Yet it still maintained an air of seriousness that was sorely missing from the abysmal Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was a great experience. I only wish these screenings were at a more accessible hour.

A "charming" introduction was made before the film by The Matt, who hosts the Esquire's midnight screenings.

I saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on 12/27/08 at midnight.

The print was in excellent shape. Projection was steady and focused. The screen in auditorium 1 is nicely sized, probably around 50 feet wide.

Before the feature, the screen (and the audience's peace) was protected by a beautiful curtain.

Unfortunately, the image was quite dim and framing was off. The top portion of the image (~1/2 foot) was projected onto the bottom masking, below the screen. This was only distracting during bright scenes.

Sound was a bit on the shrill side, with no noticeable surround activity. Normally, I would attribute these to the print, but because it was in such good shape visibly, I assume the equipment could use an upgrade.

Seating was less than comfortable, with a very gentle slope that resulted in heads obstructing the very bottom of the screen.

Despite the issues mentioned, the experience was wonderful. Bravo to the Esquire for presenting Temple of Doom Back on the Big Screen.

Auditorium 1

Cinema Grade = B-

I snuck a peak into Auditorium 2, which was once the balcony over Auditorium 1. The screen was unbelievably, pathetically, small.

Fortunately, online listings indicate which film is showing upstairs and which is downstairs. Also, because the upstairs auditorium is not handicap-accessible, the theatre will move any film downstairs with 24 hours notice. So give 'em a call and carry a cane!

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE Report

Movies should always be watched on the big screen!

I saw It's a Wonderful Life at 8pm on 12/10/08 on the Giant Screen at the Continental Theatre in Denver. My wife and I had never seen the film before (!) and we both had a Wonderful evening.

The print was in beautiful shape and the 4:3 b&w monaural presentation was outstanding.

There were close to 200 people in attendance, all respectfuly quiet. The group added to the exprience - when George starts to lose it near the end, the tension and anticipation in the room were palpable.

The lobby was otherwise pretty empty. I doubt there were 200 people in all 9 other auditoriums that night. Note to Hollywood and cinema chains - more classic screenings = more money!

It was terrific to see the Flashback Features back on the BIG screen at the Continental after their disappointing move to a smaller auditorium this past summer.

Fortunately, the Continental has recently posted the first listings for their 2009 series, all of which will be presented on their Giant 78' x 35' screen!

Saw Quantum of Solace in the Cine Capri auditorium on 11/15/08 at 7:10pm

Five theatres operated by Harkins feature a "Cine Capri" auditorium, with a notably larger screen than the standard multiplex. Harkins is to be commended for building these auditoriums, and for doing an excellent job of promoting them. Their newspaper and internet listings always specify which film is on the Cine Capri screen.

Denver newspaper listings refer to the Northfield Cine Capri as "Colorado's Largest Screen." This seems to be a case of false advertising, as a 2005 press release indicates the screen is 70' x 30,' more than 10% smaller than the 78' wide screen at the Continental. Managers at the Northfield refused to provide any information about the screen size... almost as if they had something to hide. To my eye, the Cine Capri screen, while impressive, is not as big as the Continental's.

Nevertheless, the Cine Capri provided an excellent presentation, with a giant, immersive screen that puts most multiplexes to shame. The image was well framed, bright, rock-solid steady, and free of dirt or scratches. The focus may have been a tad soft, but that might also have been the film.

The soundtrack was loud, clear, and enveloping. No outside sound was audible.

Seating was comfortable and the audience was respectful.

On the down side, movie-goers were subjected to annoying pre-show ads.

Cine Capri Auditorium: Cinema Grade = B+

Saw Bolt in Auditorium 10 on 11/23 at 5pm in Disney Digital 3D.

There was a small mark on the screen right in the center. The image was dim, which was made worse by the dark glasses. Otherwise the image was well-framed and steady. Sound was satisfactory.

As reported earlier, the Giant Screen at the Continental Theatre is back in action.

The previous review pertained to special charity screenings, but after seeing a current release (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa on 11/09/08 at 4:30pm), I wanted to point out one note:

They are still not running pre-show commericals or advertisements. Bravo to Regal Entertainment for keeping those ads out of the Giant Screen Auditorium, and demonstrating a real sense of showmanship!

Regal should advertise this fact in their newspaper listings, to lure back those movie lovers who have chosen to stay home out of disdain for on-screen ads.

Denver's GIANT Screen is Back!

Review based on two screenings:
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition (8:30pm on 11/05/08) (full report)
- Madagascar (6pm on 11/06/08)

After being closed for several months for an auditorium remodel, the Giant 78-foot-wide screen at the Continental Theatre is back in action.

The huge curved screen was unaltered during the remodel, and still engulfs close-sitting viewers like no other cinema in operation today.

The Auditorium Remodel
The front 1/3 maintains the same slope as before; the middle 1/3 slopes just a little more steeply, and the back 1/3 slopes very steeply on high stadium-style risers.

The seats have all been replaced with high-backed rockers, which feature retractable cup-holder arm-rests.

Because of the new configuration, there appear to be considerably fewer seats than before. There are now 600 seats, according to box office staff.

The original seating layout was staggered so that most seats had a gap directly in front of them, rather than another seat. Now, most seats are aligned one in front of another, but presumably this will not be an issue because of the steeper slope.

Row width, which was very impressive in the original layout, has not been decreased by much. It is still easy to walk past seated moviegoers without banging into their knees.

Sound
Acoustics seem unharmed by the new layout. Sound is exceptional, with a very wide front soundstage, deep, boom-y bass, and immersive surround. Volume is loud, but not uncomfortable.

Projection
A new projection booth has been built roughly 10 feet closer to the screen at the top of the stadium risers. The construction of the new booth of course necessitated a re-calibration of sound and projection, meaning that everything is currently in excellent shape. Hopefully, this calibration will be maintained in the months and years to come.

The image is bright, steady, and beautiful. The picture is sharply focused from top to bottom and across to each side, despite the deep curvature of the D-150 screen. The film is cleanly and accurately framed on all four sides for both 2.35:1 and 1.85:1 films.

A Christy projector is visible through the window above the back row. Unfortunately, the old Norelco AA-II projector, which is capable of both 35mm and 70MM is not currently installed.

Pre-Show
Wonderfully, there were no pre-show advertisements or commercials. Hopefully, Regal will continue this when current releases resume in the Giant Screen auditorium. However, the presentation would be even more dramatic if the curtains were kept closed until showtime.

A Few Very Minor Gripes
Lighting
The auditorium lights are not fully off during the film. When the entrance to Moria collapsed, leaving the Fellowship in total darkness, the screen and the room were not as dark as they should have been.

Solution – Lights should be completely off during the film.

Seating Comfort
In the original seating arrangement each row was on a flat "step," each just a little higher than the one in front of it. Now, the front section of the auditorium is on a continuous slope. This made me feel as if I was sliding down out of my seat, because my feet were lower than felt natural. Note: A friend who accompanied me felt the same way.

Solution – Footrests should be added to the backs of the seats, particularly in the front section.

Additionally, the seating angle in the front section (6th row) seemed to position my head and back too "upright." I had to press back on the seat to achieve a comfortable view of the screen. Overall, I found the seating to be slightly less comfortable than before, which was exacerbated by the fact that I was watching a 3 ½ hour film.

Solution – The angle of the seat backs of the front section should be adjusted so that they recline a bit more in their default position.

Aesthetics
The auditorium doesn't feel as "special" as it used to. It looks and feels like most other theatres, but with a massive screen. I assume this was intended; to make it more comfortable and attractive to a younger crowd, but I can't help but be slightly disappointed. Ultimately, though, if this change helps keep the Giant Screen in operation, it can only be viewed as positive.

Solution – none.

Shadow Puppets
The back row is now a short distance below the projection window. During the end credits of Madagascar, movie-goers reached up, casting shadows on the screen. Hopefully, this will not ever be a problem during the actual movie.

Solution - Close vigilance by the ushers.

All in all, the Giant Screen at the Continental is unlike any other. The picture and the sound remain top-notch. Bravo to Regal Cinemas and the Continental Management for preserving the Giant Screen experience.

The Continental is the place to see a current blockbuster, and hopefully more classic films through their Flash-Back Features series.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition Report

I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition on 11/05/08 at 8:30pm in Auditorium 5 at the Continental Theatre.

The print and presentation of Fellowship was absolutely flawless... stunning... outstanding!

The smallest visual and aural details added to the richness of the film in this larger-than-life presentation; the sweat beading on Bilbo's head during his birthday speech; the crackle of the fire in his home far off to the side during an indoor chat.

Bravo to Regal Cinemas and Continental Management for obtaining this print and presenting it so magnificently.

Unfortunately, the crowd was small, appearing to be just under 100 people. The marketing of this screening was very poor. I am confident that if the awareness had been greater, the film could have sold out.

When the new Flashback Features series kicks off in January, the classic films must be on the Giant screen. And quite frankly, the Extended Editions of the entire The Lord of the Rings Trilogy should be a part of that experience!

Continental GIANT SCREEN Re-Opening in Denver

UPDATE #2: The Continental's marquee, which faces on the busy I-25 corridor, is proudly advertising the classic film screenings playing this week.

UPDATE: Regal now has the screenings listed on their site. Tickets are still not available through Fandango.

The Giant Auditorium at Denver's Continental Theatre re-opens this week after a largely un-necessary but hopefully benign remodeling.

The perfectly sloped auditorium with excellent sight lines has been replaced with a stadium configuration and new seating.

Fortunately, the Giant 78' wide screen has been preserved.

To celebrate, Regal Cinemas is presenting TOP SECRET SCREENINGS of several past hits.

These screenings were published in the 11/02 Denver Post, but they are NOWHERE TO BE FOUND on the entire Interwebs. There are (currently) no listings on Fandango, nor any mention at Regal's website. Shame on Regal for not promoting these films!

11/05 - Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (10am & 6pm) ($1)
11/05 - The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition (2pm & 8:30pm) ($1)

A few thoughts:
- Crystal Skull isn't worth $1.

- The Extended Edition of Fellowship rarely shows up on the big screen. This is an awesome opportunity! Hopefully the Continental will show the Extended Editions of the entire trilogy as part of their FlashBack Features series in the near future.

- Showing Madagascar just before the sequel opens is a great idea, and a neat opportunity for children who were too young to see it three years ago. It would be nice to see Casino Royale on the Big Screen as well!

- The Giant Screen deserves to have 70MM projection whenever possible. Titanic played in 70MM at the Seattle Cinerama just last year. Shame on Regal for not including 70MM projection as part of their re-opening. Hopefully, this will be remedied in the near future.

Despite some clear mis-steps on the part of Regal Cinemas, it's wonderful that Colorado moviegoers have the opportunity to see these films (except KotCS) Back on the Big Screen. And the Giant Screen at the Continental is one of the greatest theatres around.

Get out and see classic films and the next blockbusters at the Continental!

The Jerk Report

I saw The Jerk at 9PM at the Continental Theatre in Auditorium 9.

Attendance was poor; less than 100 people. I overheard folks complaining as they walked to the auditorium that the film wasn't playing on the big screen (which is currently closed for a remodel).

Regal - PLEASE move the FlashBack Series back to the Big Screen as soon as the remodel is complete. This terrific series will help keep the movie-going experience alive IF you give people a real reason to leave their homes.

The print was in excellent shape. However, there were several unfortunate and inexcusable problems with the presentation.

1.) Initially, the 1.85:1 image was stretched across the 2.35:1 scope screen, distorting everything. This was only fixed after I went out to complain.

Solution: The person who starts the film should bother to look at the screen to make sure everything is correct.

2.) The masking was left open at the 2.35:1 ratio, making it apparent that green light from an exit sign was flooding the lower right hand corner of the screen. This was not a problem for The Jerk, but would be for any 2.35:1 film.

Solution: A) Some sort of simple shield should be installed over the exit sign to prevent light spill on the screen. B) Make sure the masking is in the correct position.

3.) The sound (original mono) was overly loud and tinny, to the point of being painful at times. (I had a similar experience at Jaws in the Giant Screen auditorium (#5) a few years back.)

Solution: Volume and equalization need to be adjusted for older films with mono soundtracks.

4.) The incorrect lens was re-applied during the end credits (dancing sequence), once again distoring the image, to the groans of the audience memebers still in their seats.

Solution: Show some respect for your customers, for crying out loud. Don't screw up the picture while there are people sitting there watching the film, even if it's just the credits. This lack of showmanship is why more and more people are staying home and watching movies on their home theaters.

The Lord of the Rings EXTENDED EDITIONS Back on the Big Screen

The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA is showing the Extended Editions of the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Sunday, October 12. Additionally, there are screenings of the individual films on 10/10, 10/11, & 10/13

According to theatre staff, all three films will be presented in 35mm. This marks the first time The Return of the King: Extended Edition has been publicly screened in 35mm in the United States.

Bravo to the Brattle for presenting these epic films Back on the Big Screen!

Hopefully other cinemas across the U.S. will follow suit and schedule the Extended Editions in 35mm in the coming months... Particularly the Continental Theatre in Denver...

The Dark Knight will be re-released to IMAX theatres (and possibly others) in January, in an attempt to stir up (and capitalize on) Oscar buzz. Bravo to Warner Brothers for putting this great film back in theatres.

How about a double feature with Batman Begins?

The screen was laughably small. The first comment my girlfriend made was that the screen seemed about the size of the screen I use with my HD projector at home. In reality is was larger, but only by about 2 or 3x. Even worse the screen was inexplicably high on the wall given its size.

Additionally, the picture was shaky, and it wasn't masked properly. There was about 2 inches of white space at the top of the screen. I couldn't tell if the image was projected off the screen or if this was just extra space.

The sound was not good, but other problems overshadowed this.

The auditorium was bad all around. The worst problem was the sound proofing.

I have never been in *any* auditorium where the neighboring theatre's sound was as audible. This wasn't the typical problem where you could hear the rumbling bass. You could actually hear the music. At times, it was difficult to understand the dialogue (Our movie was in 'British.') because the sound next door was so loud.

It was clear to me that a larger auditorium had been twined to create the current auditorium. The ceiling was asymmetrical, sloping up from its lowest point on the right to a peak on the left where the ceiling meets the wall.

The only worse theatre in SF than the Lumiere is the Stonestone.

Raiders of the Lost Ark Back on the Big Screen

Paramount pulled Raiders of the Lost Ark from distribution earlier this year because of their release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Why they did that is a mystery. Did they think audiences were unable to understand that there was a new Indiana Jones film in theatres if a few revival houses were also showing Raiders? Or did they fear that their new movie wouldn't compare very well to the original?

At any rate, the hiatus is over. Raiders of the Lost Ark is playing in in Maryland right now (hurry - ends tomorrow!) and will be in Arizona and Minnesota over the next few months. (Temple and Crusade are also showing in Maryland.)

Check our Back on the Big Screen Listings for details, and keep checking back. Hopefully more theatres will get Raiders back on the Big Screen, where it belongs!

I saw "Mamma Mia" on Sunday afternoon in Auditorium 5. The screen size wasn't the biggest I have experienced, but was passable. The presentation was good.

Sound was great, except for Pierce Brosnan's singing. OMG!

Due to the unexpected crowd, we sat further away from the screen than my husband usually lets me, but I still found the view acceptable. The audience was full of ABBA fans who enjoyed participating and clapping.

I am no theatre expert, but I am a sucker for a good night out and a great deal. For my $12 admission, I enjoyed free popcorn and a good sized fountain drink. I will be going back!

I saw The Dark Knight (IMAX) in Auditorium 9 at 9am on 07/27/08.

Watching The Dark Knight projected in IMAX is a thrilling experience. Christopher Nolan has created a real event with The Dark Knight (more details), and it works. Thanks to his efforts, the 35mm sequences look spectacular, and the IMAX sequences are overwhelming. The hard cuts from one sequence to another are barely noticable.

However, the UA Colorado Center's IMAX projection was painfully dim. The Dark Knight looked brighter in 35mm at AMC Flatiron Crossing 14, and that simply should not be the case.

Also, there were a half dozen small marks on the screen (or the projector lens?) that were distracting during bright scenes.

On the plus side:
The image was otherwise well projected: steady, focused, and clean. The sound was rich, expansive, engulfing, and loud (without being uncomfortable). The audience was respectfully quiet.

Prior to the show, there were no annoyiong slides or commericals. Instead, we were treated the The Dark Knight score. A manager came in at show time to welcome everyone and asked folks to slide toward the middle and turn off their cell phones. Bravo!

After the show, I spoke with a manager, and thanked her for the lack of advertisments and for the greeting. Then I politely complained that the image was far too dim and there were marks on the screen. I asked that they please get a new bulb or do something to address the problem. She listened politely but did not really seem eager to take action.

I have heard that the projection failed completely during a press screening a few weeks ago, and wonder if they are having problems with their equipment.

The UA Colorado Center is selling out all of its weekend and weeknight IMAX showings of The Dark Knight. Thousands of people are making the effort to see the film in IMAX, driving past other theatres with less crowded showings. Those movie-goers (and the film-makers) deserve that The Dark Knight be as bright and beautiful as possible.
Regal, PLEASE improve the brightness of your IMAX projection.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Report

I saw Back to the Future at the Continental Theatre in Denver on 07/23/08 in Auditorium 9.

I was very disappointed that the Flashback Features films are not playing on the Continental's giant 78-foot wide screen. Regal should work with the studios to allow classics screenings to interrupt current releases for one showing each week. It's in the interests of the studios to know that their best films will get fantastic presentations for years to come, and it's in the best interests of Regal to make sure their flashback screenings are really worth leaving home for.

I sat next to a mother who was there with her children and a friend. She commented, with no prompting from me, about how disappointed she was that Back to the Future wasn't on the big screen. This wasn't some film geek, this was a mother! Maybe she will come back to other flashback screenings, but she began the evening feeling and expressing disappointment. Regal, take note.

Now that I have gotten that out of the way, I will acknowledge that the screening was a terrific experience. Not as great as it should have been, but terrific nevertheless. As the film ended, someone behind me commented about that even though he owns the DVD and can watch it at any time, it's even better to see it in the theatre.

The print was beautiful. There were a few vertical scratches near the beginning of the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, but otherwise, it was almost flawless. It was neat to see the original version, without the "To Be Continued..." tag at the end.

The screen in Auditorium 9 was about 50 feet wide. Very adequate, but again disappointing compared to Auditorium 5. Unlike many new auditoriums, the screen featured side masking instead of top & bottom masking. Bravo!

Projection was bright, focused, steady, well-framed and beautiful. Sound was dynamic and expansive across the front, but with little surround presence, likely due to the content of the film. Volume was just right.

The theatre was crowded and the audience was a blast, laughing and cheering at all the right moments. Also, outside there was Delorean outside that had been modified to match the one in the film.

On the negative side:
A low rumble was audible from another auditorium a few times. It wasn't disruptive, but it was there.

Also, the auditorium lights were left on during the opening credits. I was just about to call the theatre and discretely tell them to "turn off the lights in auditorium 9" when they went off.

Finally, we were subjected to annoying pre-show advertisements before the film.

Upcoming Flashback Features at the Continental

The Dark Knight in IMAX

An image shot using IMAX film contains much more resolution than a normal 35mm film. However, because IMAX cameras are heavier, noisier, and more expensive, no feature film has ever been photographed in IMAX.

Normally, when feature films are shown in IMAX, they are "blown up" from the regular 35mm negative. They recieve some benefits of the format (bright, steady images), but they do not have the same sharpness and detail because they are limited by the resolution of the original photography.

Even worse, modern films (IMAX blow-ups as well as regular 35mm releases) are often limited by the resolution of a "digital intermediate," where the film undergoes post-production work (FX, color balancing, etc.) in the digital realm. Because digital intermediates require putting the entire film onto a hard drive (an expensive and time-consuming process), they are often done at lower resolutions than the original photography.

Enter Director Christopher Nolan and Cinematographer Wally Pfister.

They shot 28 minutes of The Dark Knight using IMAX cameras.

And they did not use a digital intermediate for the footage they shot in 35mm, so all of the detail that was recorded was preserved during post production.

What does this mean to the viewer?

If you see The Dark Knight in an IMAX theatre (recommended), 28 minutes of the film will be sharper and more detailed than any feature film in more than 15 years. The IMAX sequences will fill the square (ish) screen and the rest of the film will appear "letterboxed." And thanks to the extra efforts taken by Nolan and Pfister, those 35mm sequences will look as good as they possibly could.

If you see The Dark Knight in a quality 35mm theatre, the image will be sharper and more detailed than most films. The scenes shot in IMAX will be cropped at the top and the bottom, because IMAX is a square (ish) format, but they will be even more detailed than the rest of the film.

If you see The Dark Knight on video, either at a "digital projection" cinema or on your television at home, you are really missing out.

Saw The Dark Knight at 2:30 on 07/18/08 in Auditorium 6.

Screen is about 50 feet wide and unfortunately features constant width masking (Scope films should always be bigger!) Projected 35mm image was rock solid and well focused but was unfortunately a little dim. AMC Flatiron - Put more light on the screen!

Sound was expansive and engaging, but not loud enough. I sometimes strained to make out the dialog. AMC Flatiron - Turn it up!

The auditorium as sloped all the way to the screen. Seats felt a bit small and rows were tight. There was a constant barrage of video advertising garbage before the film, but at least the volume was low for that as well.

I write this blog because I have always loved going to the movies. I love the magic of the shared experience. I love to lose myself in a larger-than-life fantasy.

During the 70s and 80s, I saw film after film where, as I walked out of the theatre, I excitedly pondered - When can I go see that again?

In recent years, this question occurs maybe once a year. (2007 - Ratatouille)

Most often, my response is one of the following:
- I wish I didn't just spend 2 hours watching that.
- Well, that was ok, but I'll never see it again.

But tonight I walked out of a movie thinking this:

I really should consider giving up on movies altogether.

This new complex FINALLY opens after two+ years on the site of the old 9 screen REGAL / AMC / GCC. The old complex had one of the best and biggest screens -- theatre 9 - in Buffalo.
It was THX level in every way save soundproofing from being in the
airport flight path.

The new complex is somewhat disappointing based on a pre opening inspection.

There are 16 screens -- only ONE theatre, number 4 is large [ 450 plus ish seats ] with a full width constant height 2.40 screen IE 1.85 films are masked left and right.

The other 15 screens appear to be in the 200 to 300 seat range and
are ALL constant width screens
IE for 2.40 films the screen is masked top and/or bottom.
based.

ALL of the smaller screens have a
low screen width to theatre depth
ratio . . . making the 1.85 screen image overly large for the front two thirds of the seating [ according to SMPTE guidelines ]

The ratio is much more favorable for 2.40 films.

ALL of the smaller screens appear to have 2000 W xenon lamphouses
which will provide excellent screen brightness . . . . assuming they are
run at full wattage.

Initial statements from Regal indicated all screens would have digital projection. More recently
this was changed to HALF digital projection.

As of 4/26/08 there were NO digital projectors installed other than the small Christie units for
pre show ads and programs.

This of course may change before opening.

All told it seems disappointing that a major new complex from Regal
would have only ONE large theatre out of 16 . . . . and further that there are no signs of high end
digital projection.

Last night Brandie & I saw Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull at The Embassy Theatre in Wellington, NZ.

The theater was originally opened in 1924 and renovated in 2003 for the Return of the King premiere. It seats 1,749 in a gorgeous auditorium that reminded both Brandie & I of the Kodak Theater you see on the Academy Awards.

We arrived at the theater about an hour before the show and had a beer and appetizer at the cafe in the lobby. The theater has assigned seating and we purchased our tickets in advance so it made the wait for the show very civil - no worries about lines or whether we'd get a bad seat.

Sound, picture and seating were all top notch - I had no difficulty enjoying the film. Sound was clear but not painfully loud, and the seats were very large and comfortable. At some point in the future I'd like to try out their 'platinum seating' which for a few dollars more gets you leather armchairs in a front-and-center location. I didn't bring a drink into the theater but saw many other movie-goers with glasses of wine or bottles of beer.

My only complaint was that given the size of the auditorium the screen actually seemed a little small! Four thumbs up for The Embassy.

The Good and the Ugly

I saw two movies on Sunday (05/03).

Iron Man was at Century Cinema in Corte Madera, one of the best theatres in the San Francisco bay area, second only to the Winchester 21 & Winchester 22 in San Jose.

But don't take it from me, take it from Lars Ulrich of Metallica, who was spotted in the theatre by my brother.

As usual, the presentation was excellent all around. Sound and picture were terrific.

Later that night, I caught Forgetting Sarah Marshall at the Century Northgate in San Rafael. The presentation was generally passable, though the screen was small and the sound from a neighboring auditorium was audible at one point.

However, as we were leaving, I noticed a patron from another auditorium complaining politely to the otherwise unoccupied ticket-taker that no sound was playing during the previes in her auditorium.

What did he do? Did he jump up and contact someone immediately to investigate?

No. The worthless idiot stood there and questioned her. "Are you sure it isn't just the slides?" He continued to ask her questions like that as I walked away.

This kind of lousy customer service is yet another reason why more and more movie-goers are staying home, and why the Century Northgate gets a Cinema Grade = F. (My only excuse is that I had a baby-sitter and the film wasn't playing any place much better.)

Big Screen Blockbuster Season

The blockbuster season has arrived, with an exciting slate of films this summer that deserve to be BIG and LOUD.

Movies like Iron Man, Speed Racer, Prince Caspian, Indiana Jones, The Incredible Hulk, Wall-E and The Dark Knight are all larger than life, and should be seen in the best theatres around.

Back on the GIANT Screen in Colorado

The Continental Theatre resumes its Flashback Features program in June, with screenings of classic films on Wednesdays at 9PM on their 78' wide screen.

The Continental boasts one of the largest screens in the world. Instead of tearing it down or splitting it into smaller theatres, United Artists built 5 small auditoriums alongside it in 1996 and Regal is currently adding 4 additional theatres to the site. According to Fandango, the theatre appears to be undergoing a name change as well, becoming the "Centennial 6."

Regardless of the name, are very few cinemas left in the world that can provide a blockbuster experience like that of the main house at the Continental. It is THE place to see current releases like Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull AND classics like Back to the Future and Grease.

I saw a movie at the Orinda Theater recently. The theater is a beautifully preserved art deco theater. On the outside, there is a neon lit tower and an old fashioned marquee. The lobby is somewhat small, but everything looks very original and well preserved. There are large murals on the walls and art deco lighting illuminates the main auditorium. There were no commercials or ads. The lights dimmed and the curtain opened. It was nice that the theater does curtain calls. There were a few previews and the movie began after only a few minutes.

The screen was a decent size. I could not tell the exact size, but it was probably about 50 feet. The Dolby Digital Surround Sound was very good. Bass was decent and the audio was very crisp and enveloping. There was a little bit of dust when the movie began, but otherwise the movie was very clear and in focus. An employee came into the auditorium to check on the movie and also adjusted the temperature just after the movie began.

The red plush seats were soft and comfortable, but there were no cup holders. The armrests did not move. There were several hundred seats. The front of the theater was sloped seating, and the back half was old fashioned stadium style.

The popcorn tasted great. The prices of concessions and tickets were slightly lower than other theaters in the area.

For a Sunday morning matinee, there were only a few customers.

Overall, I give this movie theater the best possible grade.

The Terminator Report

I saw the Terminator at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco on 04/09/08 at 9:05.

They ran a stunning new 35mm print, which had been created after the rights switched to MGM and the sound was remastered. It featured the MGM logo at the beginning, a "Sound Restoration" credit card after the credits, and a very engaging 5.1 soundtrack. (The original theatrical release was mono.)

The presentation was better than the one I originally experienced at the Reel to Reel 4 in Johnson City, TN in 1984. (and better than BluRay on an HDTV)

Between 200 and 300 people were there, all laughing and cheering appropriately, but otherwise respectfully quiet. How many theatres had a crowd of 200 people for the Ruins or Leatherheads on Tuesday night?

The Terminator was the second half of a double feature with RoboCop. Based on the end credits, they had a terrific looking print of that as well.

Would You Pay $35 for a Movie Ticket?

Variety reports that Village Roadshow is developing "Gold Class Cinemas" with $35 ticket prices. The first two theatres will open in suburbs of Seattle & Chicago this fall.

Idea is that plushing up the current moviegoing experience will encourage auds that typically stay home to watch movies via their pricey home theaters to venture out again.

Yes, moviegoers who care about a quality presentation are turning more and more to home theaters, and that cinemas need to do something to "plush up" the moviegoing experience if they want to survive.

However, Village Roadshow seems to be clueless about what that means.

Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.

Village Roadshow's site proudly brags about their "smaller more private and intimate cinemas."

Tiny auditoriums.... cocktails and appetizers.... digital projection... I ALREADY HAVE ALL OF THESE THINGS IN MY HOME THEATER. How exactly are you going to lure me out of my house if you aren't providing something more?

Interestingly, the comments posted on the Variety article complain that most movies coming out of Hollywood aren't worth $35.

I actually would pay $35 to attend a theatre with a truly big screen, if the ushers threw out disruptive talkers, if the show was preceeded by quiet music and a curtain instead of screen ads, and if they showed classic blockbusters when the current releases were lousy.

How much would you pay for that?

I saw Transformers in IMAX a few months ago.

Auditorium 21 is the IMAX and the screen was huge. I estimate that it was slightly smaller than the Imax at the Metreon in San Francisco, but it was still very impressive. The Transformers on the screen looked like they really were 60 feet tall.

The picture quality was amazing. It was clear, bright, and dust-free. The surround sound was loud and clear with reasonably good bass. At certain parts of the movie the sound was loud, but it was never painfully loud.

The stadium seats had comfortable seat bottoms, but the backs of the chairs were stiff and did not lean back. The cupholder armrests could lift up. There was plenty of legroom. The theater and the restrooms were very clean. During the movie, an usher would check on the auditorium several times.

Before the movie, there were no commercials. Colorful lights lit up the screen prior to the movie. There was only 1 movie trailer and an IMAX trailer.

The popcorn was sitting around under heat lamps, but it was reasonably fresh.

I also saw Pirates II, 1 year prior. The movie had been out for months and therefore it was in one of the smallest auditoriums. Auditorium 19 had a screen that was approximately 30 feet wide. It had top down masking and the image size was on the small side. Picture presentation was clear and dust-free. The surround sound was enveloping and clear. The stadium seats in 19 were much more comfortable than the Imax chairs, but they also did not lean back. Overall, the theater was clean. Although the auditorium was very crowded on a Sunday afternoon, the audience was quiet and respectful.

Cameo Cinema

The Cameo Cinema is a charming little restored theatre. The auditorium features a curtain, and a member of the staff came out to introduce the film an ask everyone to turn off their cell phones.

That is everything positive I can say about my experience at the Cameo.

I drove more than an hour each way to see Jaws on 03/15 only to discover that the Cameo is presenting its classic films using DVDs and a video projector.

If I wanted to watch a Jaws DVD projected onto a small screen with a video projector I COULD STAY HOME AND DO IT IN MY OWN LIVING ROOM.

The screen was about 20 feet wide when opened to the 16:9 aspect ratio. During medium or long shots, the character's faces became brown blurry blobs. Contrast was abominable.

The man who introduced the feature made a point of apologizing for the quality of the "print" because of the film's age. And there is no mention on the Cameo's website about the fact that they are using DVDs for public commercial screenings. I can't help but wonder if they might be hiding this little detail because they are breaking the law.

The Cameo Theatre has been removed from our Back on the Big Screen listings.

It might be a acceptable venue for current features, assuming they use film. I might even go so far as to recommend the Cameo as a good place to hang out and watch a VIDEO, if they were up front about what they were actually showing, and if I wrote a blog about Home Theater.

The AMC Loews Universal Cineplex 20 in Orlando is a first run theatre with regular screenings of older films. They have two series, one showing past favorites of recent years, and another with older classics. This is a terrific program and it would be great to see AMC expand it to other theatres.

Unfortunately, AMC is doing a terrible job of promoting these screenings on the internet. There are no listings other than the ones you can find through Fandango (via the link above), which only shows a few titles in the very near future.

The UCF student newspaper has an article about the series, but AMCTheatres.com has nothing at all about the program. (Notice how the UCF story features a film student who didn't know about the series until he arrived at the box office.)

Back on the BIG Screen in Newport Beach

Edwards Big Newport 6 is participating in Regal's Flashback Features program with a terrific line-up of Big Screen hits at midnights on Saturdays.

The Big Newport is a wonderful (and rare) success story. Most giant single-screen theatres have been torn down or twinned, but the main auditorium at the Big Newport was preserved and 5 new auditoriums were built alongside it, much like Denver's Continental Theatre.

The Big Newport's website notes:

The main screen is the largest movie screen on the West Coast, attracting both film fans and tourists. It is a 40-by-80-foot screen that attracts the newest releases. With a seating capacity of 1,108, the theater is big and roomy and boasts a Dolby Surround Sound system. The seats in the theater are designed with comfort in mind. The seats are large, high-back,velour-cushioned reclining chairs with cup holders and plenty of leg room.

It's great to see theatre management take such pride in their operation. The Big Newport is a fantastic place to see current films OR past favorites!

I saw Vantage Point in auditorium 14, which is the biggest. The screen was about 55-60 feet wide with left and right side masking. I was surprised that they still made new theaters with side masking. The theater was only built in 2003. I believe only 14 has side masking. The stadium seats were very soft and comfortable. All of them could lean back slightly and they all had lift up cup holders. The temperature was comfortable and the theater was very clean.

The picture quality was crisp and clear. The digital surround sound was also very clear and had very good bass.

All the big theaters are on the second floor. You can look through the glass windows up to the second floor and see the led board that lists the theater numbers, movies, and showtimes. That way you can easily pick a movie in the big houses. Fourteen, 13, and 11 are big. Twelve is slightly smaller with a screen that is about 45 feet. The rest of the theaters are all smaller. Auditorium 1 is the smallest.

The kettle corn at the concession stand was fresh and they also serve regular popcorn with real butter.

Spielberg Ponders Film-Only Release of Indy IV

According to Joblo.com, Stephen Spielberg is considering the possibility of releasing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull only on 35mm film, with no digital video projection showings. (IMAGE QUALITY: Film vs Digital)

If this goes through, bravo to Mr. Spielberg! And bravo also for shooting the movie on film instead of digitially. Perhaps Mr. Lucas can learn from your example.

If a digital intermediate is used for post-processing, hopefully it will be scanned at a 4k resolution, or all of the extra effort will be lost.

Any chance of releasing some prints in 70MM, Steve?

We've added two new reviews, both for private studio theatres (Paramount Lot & Stag). Although we normally stick to reviews of public theatres, these cinemas serve as a good reminder of how good the moviegoing experience could be, if theater owners would put forth a little effort.

Which brings us to the following news tidbit. According to the Press Democrat, the Rohnert Park 16 is being sold to a company called Reading International. Now, the Rohnert Park 16 is nothing special, with auditoriums that range between "Adequate" and "BAD."

However, Reading International appears to be one lousy company. Their website proudly proclaims:

We are different from most other cinema companies due to our real property emphasis.

Unlike other cinema companies, we are not compelled to continue and redevelop our cinema assets, where higher and better uses become available for such properties.

There is not one single reference about providing quality entertainment.

Reading International sounds like the United Artists and Mann idiots who sold off the Cooper Twin and Century 21 in Denver to make a quick real estate buck in the 1990s, and many other theatre executive idiots across the country over the years. (Including anyone who ever twinned anything.)

To moviegoers everywhere, avoid Reading International's theatres. And when they sell their theatres to develop shopping centers or apartment complexes, avoid those as well.

Stag Theatre

Review based on various screenings in the late '90s & early '00s.

The screen is 49.5' wide, and projection is impeccable. The image is brightly, evenly focused, rock-solid-steady, and the edges of the frame match the edges of the screen perfectly (a feat that public theatres seem unable to achieve). The screen is not protected by a curtain between showings, but they don't seem to have a problem with vandalism.

The room itself is astoundingly "dead," devoid of the slightest echo. Every surface is covered by a velvety soft material, including the 300 plush seats.

The sound is awesome. The bass rumbles like no other theatre, and the entire dynamic range is sharp and enveloping.

Paramount Studios Lot Theatre

Being the official theatre of Paramount Studios, one would expect something extravagant. A lavish red carpet guides the visitor into the theatre itself where they are greeted by the smiling faces of industry legends framed on white lacey walls. The CEO of Paramount personally welcomes each guest over a loud-speaker as a hand-painted mural stretches across the ceiling. Alright, I made that last part up. Truth be told, the presentation is classy without being too over-the-top.

The screen is massive and flawless, letting no detail slip by and the sound quality is crisp and concise. Also, there's no need to fear making undesirable contact with something sticky or wet. Ushers see to it that no consumables enter the facilities. The seats are unnaturally comfortable. You'll forget that your lower half exists about halfway through the movie.

I recently attended this theatre for an advanced screening of 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' (not a bad movie if I do say so myself!). I met a handful of celebs including Hayden Panettiere from Heroes and Daryl Sabara of Spy Kids fame (who I somehow got mixed up with Freddie Highmore; Don't ask me how I did that; It was quite embarrassing)!

If you ever get an opportunity to attend a screening in this exclusive theatre, you will not be disappointed.

Saw Juno with my mom on Screen #10.

She's part of a club where you can call ahead and have tickets waiting for you. Even saved seats. But we decided last minute so we waited in line. It went quick.

Last time my friend Bert had to use the ATM ticket dispenser 'cause it was a weekend night with super long line and we woulda been late.

But tonight me & my Mom got there kinda early. They had the usual candy, soda, kaki mochi, pizza, hot dogs, popcorn... but also cinnabun, candied macadamia nuts, and even fresh fruit. $2.50 for a unpeeled orange. We didn't get nothing. Some of the game room killing games were out of order.

Over by the self-serve soda fountains you could sneak upp the stairs to enter the theatre from the back row of the stadium seating. It was my mom's idea 'cause she likes to sit near the back.

There was a slide show of ads and Hollywood gossip sponsored by coke, but no sound on them, so we could talk story beforehand. The lights went out and the previews started. Not too many of them, but I do remember talking through one that was for an animated feature about Coke robots. WTF? Pretty soon, movies are gonna be nominated for CLIO awards.

The movie was cool but, and not only 'cause it was about a pregnant girl, we could not get mad when the baby in the back row wouldn't be quiet, and it took forever for the mom to finally take it away. And when she came back and it was still crying. We gotta lotta aloha for our keiki in Hawaii.

After the movie, there is a bathroom uppstairs too, but I didn't check out how big it is. The bigger bathroom's downstairs, and during mad rushes you will have to wait a little. I like that as you enter the downstairs john, there's a huge mirror to check yourself out in.

We walked down the block to have smoothies. For a Sunday, it was nice to see a lot of the restaurants still serving.

My mom parked across the street at Ward Warehouse. If Jim were here, he'd have gotten valet'd.
